On of the best French label of the 80s : ruled by Stéphane Saunier
(now the boss of Roadrunner France) and Philippe Debris.

Un des meilleurs label des années 80 fondé par Philippe Debris.
En 83, il fusionne avec Sonics Rds (specialisé dans le rock "australien")
dirigé par Stéphane Saunier. En 89/90, le label arrête son activité après
avoir sorti des disques des Ramones, Fixed Up, City Kids et autres Les Thugs.
Stéphane Saunier a pris la direction de la division France de Roadrunner.

    Stéphane Saunier : Voyage dans le "Business Rock"

En 1983, Philippe Debris, autre Havrais, monte Closer : les dix premières signatures 
sont Barracudas, Bad Brains, Dream Syndicate, Marc Minelli, Bruce Joyner, Droogs, 
Dickies, Dogs (rééditions), Only Ones et Nomads ! Du grand, du très grand, et 
parfois même du suprème. Peu à peu, Closer/Sonics se rapprochent. La Rock devient
membre de Closer (qui partageait à l'époque ses bureaux avec l'Invitation au Suicide, 
découvreur de Virgin Prunes, Christian Death, Certain General etc), avec un rôle 
axé sur l'artistique (groupes, productions, pochettes)
Nous n'avons jamais voulu suivre un mouvement, Pas de gros délires. Quand on a 
sorti les Prime Movers, c'était en 87, tout le monde se foutait du Hardcore. Un 
paquet de trucs s'était passé, Minor Threat existait depuis 85 (NdM : ils ont splitté 
avant 85 !!). On a dû vendre 300 Prime Movers, c'était juste histoire de se dire : ce 
groupe existe, ce style existe, voilà. Quand tu rentres dans un mouvement tu loupes 
plein de choses. Comme en 77 où tout le monde se foutait des Real Kids parce qu'ils 
étaient Rock'n'Roll. Aujourd'hui c'est le Hardcore. S'il y a un autre truc qui se 
déclenche, les gens passeront à côté et découvriront les groupes à moitié mort, dans 
des formations qui n'ont plus rien à voir avec les originales et on assiste à la fin d'un 
mouvement. C'est pourquoi on était éclectique : du vieux Blues au Hardcore. Sans 
compter que si tu vis sur un mouvement, que deviens-tu quand il se casse la gueule ? 
Non, on préférait sortir les Batmen, les Thugs et le Kid. Trois mondes différents. ... 
On vendait de la musique vivante. On a jamais sorti de compilations de groupes 
morts. Achetez des disques de groupes qui vivent, n'achetez pas la nostalgie. 
Je suis fan des Stooges mais on a jamais sorti de live limité à 500 copies.

Closer est mort officiellement en octobre 90. Les raisons en sont nombreuses : 
les problèmes de production avec le Kid marquaient un peu la fin d'un rêve, la 
fatigue, l'argent qui ne rentrait pas, l'évolution du marché : les magouilles de la 
grande distribution, le ministère de la Culture le rock officiel, mes couilles, les 
groupes sont de plus en plus exigeants au niveau des moyens d'enregistrement - 
ce qui est tout a fait compréhensible surtout avec ceux avec qui on travaillait depuis 
trois, quatre ou cinq ans. Le fait d'être au Havre, et non à Paris, était un gros
handicap tu es un provincial, et tu es pris comme ça. Les media sont concentrés 
à Paris et tu ne croises pas tous les chabadas-chabadas parisiens à tous les concerts ... 
Pour les banques et tout le biz idem . La bande à la Close était ce 45t (enregistré en 
Noel 89 et jour de l'an par l'équipe Closer au grand complet) dirigé quelque peu 
contre ces mêmes personnes : je sentais qu'on allait crever et qu'il fallait qu'on leur 
dise, à travers la bande à la Close ce qu'on pensait d'eux. C'était vraiment entre eux 
et nous, C'était notre centième disque, on tenait à se faire plaisir. Les échos furent 
souvent très mauvais, pourtant c'était assez gentil. Bruno Lion n'a pas tellement 
aimé (la culture qui est en patûre), les journalistes non plus, des rédacteurs en chef 
ont soigneusement évité de chroniquer le Shredded Ermines qui est sorti après. 
D'autres comme Claude Guyot du Fair (le Fair c'est pas clair) ont bien apprecié. 
On avait aussi envoyé le disque à Squatt (sous label de CBS) parce qu'on avait pas 
le contact de Soldat Louis. Squatt nous a répondu : nous avons bien écouté votre 
disque, c'est bien mais ça ne nous intéresse pas.

    Stéphane Saunier : Voyage dans le "Business Rock"

Je suis arrivé à l'école vers 13 ans avec un jean et des santiags. Il y avait un autre 
type habillé de la meme façon. On était les deux Rocky du bahut. On a continué à 
m'appeler Rocky et lui, Popol. Le destin, quoi ! ... Je dois beaucoup à Yves de 
Vinyl Solution. Il m'a fait écouter quelques disques importants à quinze piges, 
sa boutique était en face du lycée. ... En 73-75 je jouais déjà dans des groupes
sans parvenir à rester avec des mecs assez longtemps. C'est comme ça que je suis 
devenu road pour Little Bob et des City Kids ou manager des Bad Brains, Fixed Up. 
Il y avait une certaine frustration mais je m'étais tellement engagé envers eux que 
c'était impossible de les larguer en marche. Parfois, avec les Fixed Up, j'étais sur le 
côté de la scène, je les voyais, ça me faisait envie. On faisait parfois le boeuf, je 
faisais un ou deux morceaux avec eux en rappel, c'était une grande bouffée d'oxygène. 
Au début des années 80 La Rock lance Sonic Rds : Je ne voulais faire que du 45t 
chanté en anglais dont le taux de royalties était le plus élevé que le marché ait 
jamais connu : 2,64F. Sur un 45t, faut le faire. ... En fait c'est le début du rock 
australien et une longue collaboration avec John Needham de Citadel Rds. Ma 
devise à l'époque c'était : Sonics pense que la musique c'est super, mais dégueule 
à la face du Business. C'était imprimé sur mes cartes de visite. Parallèlement
à cette bruyante/brillante entreprise vinylique, Rocky édite le fanzine Private 
Gossips (9#) : à l'époque, Sonic était distribué par New Rose et je m'étais pêté 
mes deux cents exemplaires à la main au stylo rouge : n'achetez pas la video 
live des Real Kids [que vendait New Rose]. Je descendais un maximum.
